About That “Triage Healing”…

So, one of the things that healers have complained about over the course of Cataclysm is the complete lack of “triage” healing, which they pushed as a new feature for Cataclysm healers, and the healing model. While it sounded great on paper, and actually worked to a degree in 5-mans and heroics, it fell flat on its face in raids. Mostly, we see this with the constant changes to Circle of Healing, Wild Growth and Prayer of Healing, not to mention various ground effects, such as Healing Rain, Efflorescence, Power Word: Barrier and Holy Word: Sanctuary. Obviously, there’s something going on here that Blizzard may just not be seeing able to pull through.

Holy Word: Sanctuary

To that end, what is it that could be done differently? Currently, on the latest 4.2 PTR build, increases mana costs have come through for Divine Light, Holy Light, Flash of Light and Holy Shock. Naturally, we’d expect more nerfs to mana costs to come through for other healers as well, but is this really the right way to go about it? What was done wrong in Tier 11 content that they could change in Tier 12 content without necessarily raising mana costs again (and therefore, creating possible issues for people that are getting into heroics later in the expansion)? What could be done that might bring “triage” healing back to the forefront?

Tier 12 Preview – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Some of the new tier sets have come out with Blizzard’s official preview of tier sets, and they’ve also released current tentative information regarding set bonuses. This is obviously one of those things that’s hot on everyone’s minds, which is perfectly okay. Rightly so, it should be. Clearly, there are a lot of things that can go well, or can go poorly, with each individual set bonus, but for priests, it’s a little more complicated than that.

Priest T12

All in all, I think there’s a good amount to be said, both on a positive note, as well as the negative connotations that can come with the priest healing tier set. Personally, though, I think the absolute best part of it is the way it looks, but of course, this is subjective. So let’s take a look at the set bonuses and discuss what can come of it. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

Static Mana Regen vs. Int-Based Regen

So, I mentioned in my last post that one of my two major concerns about healing as a holy priest or restoration shaman was reliance on Test of Faith and Deep Healing – and how these can have unintended consequences on overall healing performance, and how raid encounters are going to be set up in the future. My other biggest concern is mana regeneration. Currently, holy priests and restoration shaman are the only two healers that don’t have some sort of Intellect-based mana regeneration. For discipline, this would be Rapture, and Archangel for Atonement priests; for paladins, Divine Plea; and for druids, Revitalize. This should go without saying, but also Arcane Torrent for any Blood Elves.

Revitalize

In essence, this is again an observational post – not something to be taken at face value, but something that is a concern for later on. Moreover, I’ll probably delve into other somewhat tangential things such as Mana Tide Totem, and how this can affect a restoration shaman’s gearing choices. There’s actually a specific post over at Totem Forest that explains that a bit more in detail. Moreover, shaman do have the otion of Telluric Currents, which is a huge mana gain, too – so holy priests are still kind of left in the dust here.
