So What IS LoL, Exactly?

So, I think the thing that I hear most about League of Legends, is that people aren’t even sure what it is. LoL is categorized under the MOBA genre. And, since there’s already a pretty easy to understand explanation of what MOBA means available on the Internet, I’d say that you should read it here. It’s a much better explanation than I can offer, since I wasn’t entirely sure myself. That pretty much sums up what LoL is in a (very generalized) nutshell.

But the nitty gritty of it is that it’s a primarily PvP-centric game, with a rather large following, and it’s also a very competitive game by all standards. It’s also free to play, so you never actually have to spend money on it. There’s no subscription fee, and all the necessary functions of the game, you can access without spending a dime. (There are vanity perks you can get, and some things that you can access anyway, you can get faster by spending money, but there is no gameplay advantage by spending money.)

Without going into the lore of the whole thing (since I’m not terribly familiar with it), the gameplay premise is taking two teams of champions, and pitting them against each other to win battles. Think of it similarly to a match of Alterac Valley in WoW. You have the points you need to defend, while taking down enemy points, and killing various NPCs for gold and buffs in the meantime.

Truthfully, it’s actually kind of hard to say what the game is without going beyond the sheer basics. So, I think with the next post, I’ll get into the basics of how to play. I just need to figure out a few minor computer issues between now and then, so I can record easily.

Penta Kill!: League of Legends

So… Long time no blog! I am obviously terrible about keeping this up as of late. I’ve had a lot of things on my mind IRL, and as such, haven’t really even been THINKING about this thing. Financial woes for the lose. That said, when I haven’t been raiding (6/8 Heroic on my hunter, by the way! Spine should die soon, I hope), I’ve been playing a lot of League of Legends. While this isn’t really an introductory post to League (I think I’ll actually do that in the coming days, however!), I do want to make a quick opinion post on the game.

FIRST PENTA KILL!

To be honest, I actually never thought I would have so much fun with a game like this. I’m traditionally horrible at RTS-type games, because I’m actually generally pretty bad at micromanagement to the degree that some of these games require (such as Starcraft). However, LoL isn’t full-on RTS, so it was much easier for me to pick up, since I don’t have to worry about more than two units of my own at a time (at least, controlling them). This is one of the things that has helped me with being able to manage the game, so I’m happy about it.

All in all, though, I’ve been steadily progressing in the game, getting more champions, learning them, getting better at the game in general. I want to do really well at it, and I think that I’m doing well with it. I know I’m not great at it, but thanks to sites like Reign of Gaming, SoloMid and others, I try to absorb a lot of information to get as good with it as I can. I honestly can say that there is a lot of information out there for people that have been with the game for a while, and this is definitely a good thing. However, getting into a new game, especially one such as this, can be extremely overwhelming for someone who doesn’t even know what it’s all about! As such, I want to try to remedy this. Hopefully, I’ll be able to continue with it, too, because it’s free to play (unlike Rift, unfortunately, which I would love to be able to keep up with – but without a subscription, it’s nigh impossible).

So, more to come soon on the topic of League of Legends. I think I’ll even do a video to accompany the next post as an introduction to the game!

Don’t Be Offended for Me

All right, so I’m mostly going to put out there what my opinions are on certain subjects right now. I am taking what’s probably a more controversial standpoint on this, but a discussion via Twitter is going to be anything but helpful. That said, I am going to respect people’s opinions, whether they are the same as mine, or they are different. If you cannot manage to read this post without looking at things from a rational standpoint, and you cannot respond as an adult, I would ask that you do not respond to begin with.

I don’t want to make this post a diatribe about how other people are wrong. But I have been called selfish, I have been told I don’t know what I’m talking about, and I’ve been linked this image, as if it’s supposed to show how my opinion is “wrong.” What I will say is that I hate political correctness. And yes, I do think a large majority of people need to get over themselves and get a thicker skin. However, there are going to be people that use words offensively, and there are going to be times where context shows that the offense is very definitely meant to hurt someone emotionally. What I want to dispel is this apparent belief that I can’t see that.

I do want to warn you there is a lot of stream of consciousness in here. But if you will read the entire post before scrolling down to the “Leave Comment” box, I would be greatly appreciative of this.
