Handling Guild Drama

So, these last couple months have been just loads of stress outside of gaming, but also just some grand annoyances while in gaming, as well.  A lot of it relates to some guild drama in both Rift and WoW.  Quite frankly, I’m sick of it.  The backbiting, the name-calling, the downright immaturity of it all.  It would be one thing if people that are adults would take the time to act like the adults they are.  Personally, I try to avoid conflict, and prefer to have civil discussion, but even I am human and have had my part in these issues.  I’m sure as shit not infallible.

Bitch Slap: Someone's going to get it.

That said, guild drama sucks, especially when it leads to people either quitting or getting kick from a guild.  I mean, I get that there are going to be personality conflicts and whatnot, but when there are people that are supposed to be the ones you look up to and respect looking down on, condescending to, or outright being hateful toward other members of the guild, how is that supposed to reflect on the guild to new guild members?  Now, I don’t expect people to maintain civility 100% of the time, but recent weeks have proven to be an exercise in sheer frustration.

One of the worst things someone can do to you in a raid environment is tell you you’re not good enough in something that you know you’re good at, and everyone else knows you’re good at. I just wish people would have the balls to say it to my face, rather than in a backhanded, backbiting manner. If you think I’m not good enough (or our raid team is not good enough) to handle a particular job, you should be saying that flat out, not trying to change what our other members are doing (i.e., going from a DPS build to a DPS/healing hybrid that’s primarily for AE healing when we need single-target heals), as if that will somehow magically solve the issue. Yes, it can help, but that’s not the only thing going on.

Rage Face

I don’t care how long you might have been a healer in other games, if you’re not healing in our raids normally, you have no clue how we perceive the damage patterns as people who are healing in our raids. Sure, you can look at the logs, and see exactly how much damage was taken when and by whom, but that isn’t the be-all, end-all. In an encounter where we can all but tunnel vision because the encounter mechanics allow it, we’re going to have a much higher sense of what’s going on than someone who is tanking and watching for adds and various other things going on in the encounter.

Now, I know I should be appreciative of the fact that someone else is looking for things and making suggestions. But that doesn’t stop me from thinking that they’re the wrong suggestions. No matter how well-meaning they may be, that doesn’t stop them from feeling like “you’re not doing it right.” As it stands, for the encounter in question, we have enough healers – possibly more than enough – given our level of skill. We don’t need more healers, we need to adjust our strategy. In the end, that is what’s going to kill the boss, especially when there’s already a tight DPS requirement that even I’m not sure we’re meeting.

On that note, if you have something of critique to say about me, suck it up, grow a set and tell me flat out. Don’t go behind my back to make me feel inadequate or not good enough. It’s pretty fucking clear to me that you aren’t going to be able to deal with it yourself, either, so you can sit down and shut the fuck up otherwise. /nerdrage.

Insert Nerd Rage.

You know, there’s always that one person, or several people, that really just piss you off because they’re just plain not being considerate of others. And it sucks, too. Applying this to both WoW and real life is really, really annoying. Generally I try to be patient, or try to be understanding, or try to be the level-headed one. However, there’s only so far that this alone takes you. Sometimes, you really just need to vent. And so that’s pretty much what this post is about, instead of something I’d had lined up to be the next post I was going to make here. Because of that, though, I’m going to make this a short post.

I’m one of those people that tries to take a step back and look at a problem, think it over, before approaching it. When it comes to something or someone (or both, as the case may be) that’s just making me angry, I need time away from whatever is causing the issue. Thankfully, I was able to purchase Rift this weekend and have been having fun there, and taking a mini-break from WoW to try to clear my head a little. Then last night came around, and already I’m annoyed in anticipation of tonight, and the very distinct possibility that, once again, there may not be any progression raiding for my group. Or, if we do, it’ll be limited and somewhat rushed, due to our lack of enough players to fill in holes.

So, to all you raiders out there from raid leaders and officers and guild masters everywhere: If you’re going to sign up for the raid, SHOW THE FUCK UP. If you’re going to be absent from a raid on a consistent basis, LET US KNOW MORE THAN TEN MINUTES IN ADVANCE. If we’re working on a progression boss you don’t particularly like, TOO FUCKING BAD, TRUST ME, WE DISLIKE IT MORE FOR MORE REASONS THAN YOU CAN POSSIBLY IMAGINE.
