Why Pet Healing Is Important, Part 1

One of the biggest issues healers have is the issue of healing pets. Be it hunter, warlock, mage or death knight pets in World of Warcraft, or mage, rogue, warrior or cleric pets in Rift, healers don’t want to – and usually, can’t – actively heal pets. I wish it were more possible to do so. I really, really, do. I say this as a healing priest, a healing cleric, a healing paladin, a healing mage, and a one-time healing shaman. I want to be able to heal pets.

Mend Pet

One of the biggest gripes I’ve heard is how smart heals do, in fact, heal pets. I’m still honestly lost on this point. I mean, trust me, I get that not everyone will be able to spare the global cooldown or the mana to heal a pet. But there’s a reason that pets are going to be valid targets for smart heals. Because they are integral to the DPS of the class utilizing those pets.

The Issue of Cleric DPS

Cleric DPS. Nearly the laughingstock of the game, except when it comes to AoE damage, and even then, only with Cabalist, or to a lesser degree, Inquisitor. Many people are saying lately that you cannot complete Hammerknell with cleric single-target DPS builds (Shaman, Druid, Inquisitor), unless they are hybrids with Justicar for Doctrine of Loyalty usage. It’s actually quite sad, really, how poorly cleric DPS souls scale relative to other DPS souls from the other callings. In fact, come 1.6, many mage souls are getting some major buffs, and in the case of Pyromancer, a near complete overhaul.

Strike of the Maelstrom

What I want to do with this post is not to be a naysayer, and do everything I can to try not to be a in the “sky is falling” crowd with clerics in general. That kind of thing doesn’t usually jibe well with me. But, to be honest, it can be hard not to throw yourself on that kind of bandwagon when there are very obviously some glaring issues in the current content. To that end, bear with me as I try to put this post forth in as much an objective manner as I can manage.

The Rift Experience

So, as I said in my last post, I’m currently playing Rift. Now, I have not at this time made any final decisions regarding WoW, but I am somewhat keeping track of things outside of my other gaming. Thus far, it’s an indefinite break. However, before I go on, I did decide that I wanted to keep my current domain name. Yes, that’s partly due to playing a holy priest that’s a troll, but when I originally settled on the domain name, it’s actually partially a dual meaning. The other part of it is actually due to a bad habit of finding myself trolling forums. And, of course, with the nature of trolling comes the art of having a holier-than-thou attitude. Since I actually try not to have that kind of attitude, it’s a weird sort of irony. Even if it makes sense only to myself. Anyway.

As The Big O (not that Big O, you perverts!) said, there’s a definite lack of personal blogs out there that talk about things from a player’s perspective. I’ve never been a forerunner on… well… anything, when it comes to gaming. Maybe I’ll give it a go here. To that end, there are three things that I currently play to a significant degree as a cleric in Rift: Sentinel, Shaman and Justicar. Since there’s already a Justicar manual out there, so to speak, I’ll focus more on my other main roles, being Shaman and Sentinel.
